Special seminar – Taobao’s strategies and mechanism in guarding against IPR infringement

On 27 July 2012, the Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau organized a special seminar entitled “Taobao’s strategies and mechanism in tackling online IPR infringement”, and invited the representatives from Taobao (one of the largest online trading website in the Mainland) - Mr. Ricky Shen (Senior Legal Counsel) and Mr. Zhongchang Shih, (IPR supervisor from the Information Security Department) came all the way from Hangzhou to conduct the seminar.
Enrollment for the seminar came in swiftly after invitations were sent out; reservations received soon exceeded the 30-seat limit. The scenario well reflected that members were interested in updating Taobao’s effort made in protecting the IPR owners’ legitimate interests and fending off sale of infringing goods.
Mr. Shen, as the person in charge of legal affairs regarding intellectual property issues and legal research for Taobao, gave a detailed account of the mechanism and procedures adopted in tackling alleged infringement on their website. Mr. Shih further elaborated on their cooperation with the IPR Industry in the Mainland as well as the initiatives taken in this respect.
During the Q&A session, the two speakers took a number of questions from the floor to further clarify and explain their position as an online trading platform and their approaches in fulfilling corporate social responsibility. Subsequent interaction between the speakers and participants pushed the atmosphere to new heights. Participants and speakers exchange views sincerely and candidly with reference to empirical examples.
The seminar successfully provided a platform for effective communication between Taobao and the members. Through frankly discussions, Taobao gained better understanding of the members’ expectations and, in return, the members grasped the avenues and arrangements for seeking assistance from Taobao in protecting their legitimate interests.
